What the RAD Can Do
The RAD is a powerful expansion platform. Recent work by Scott Hutter enables software-based 65816/SuperCPU emulation on the Raspberry Pi inside the RAD.
In current testing this delivers approximately **14 MHz** performance with **16 MB of SuperRAM**. The Pi acts as the processing engine, using DMA to communicate with the C64’s VIC, SID, CIA and other hardware—recreating key SuperCPU concepts in software.
Capabilities include:
– Software 65816 emulation with SuperCPU ROM support (~14 MHz, up to 16 MB SuperRAM)
– Powerful REU currently in development and large memory expansion with compatibility for supported REU software
– HDMI output for monitoring is currently in development
– Significantly more processing power than the original C64 CPU
The SuperCPU implementation is still under active development, so further performance and compatibility improvements are expected. Some graphical/compatibility issues currently exist. Treat this as an enthusiast/development project rather than a guaranteed drop-in replacement for every original CMD SuperCPU application.
The RAD can still function as the original RAD Ram Expansion Unit by Carsten Dachsbacher.
