Bbs on Windows or linux or docker?

Hello all,

I want to setup a bbs, just for fun.  For that i can use an dedicated intel nuc or an Qnap nas (docker?). When completely running it will be placed in the "server" room in our house. 🙂

Goal is that i want not that much maintenance on the OS itself.

Options i have i think:

Nas route:

I have an Qnap nas with 8 gb memory, with an intel celeron processor.  It would be very nice if it can be runned in an docker or other way, so i dont need another computer for it.

My linux knowledge is very limited. I tried it with an docker image on the qnap, the ubuntu with vnc.  Getting an error with xfce or something.Running this linux via an browser. So i stopped since i have no idea how to get it going.

Intel Nuc route:

Have an spare intel Nuc lying around with an i3 7th generation intel processor.
I can install with Linux or with Windows.

For this route i can use Linux or windows. I have tried with windows, and that works almost directly.
I'm not an particular fan of windows, so i would like to go linux route.
Since there are so many Linux distributions, what is the best to use just for the bbs?

Would be very nice to use docker or so on the Nas, so i don't need another box.
But if it is a smarter choice to use  the nuc, then offcourse i go that route.  And then, windows 10 or linux?

In all ways i probably coming here for setting everything up.

Thanks,

Best regards from The Netherlands.

If you want to setup a BBS with little to no OS maint I would choose Linux, I prefer Debian, but your mileage may vary. Mystic BBS is extremely simple to set up and you could have it running in an hour max. Synchronet is another one that runs very well and is a little more difficult to set up but much much more feature rich. I run a Mystic board and the only time I have to reboot it is when I am rebooting the Debian Virtual Machine it runs in after a Kernal update! Otherwise, it just runs and runs! Same goes for the OS!

I would not run it in a Docker Container (although others may say you can with no issues) put it on the NUC and stick it in the closet and go..

Since you posted this message in the Image forum, if you are interested in a C64 BBS which Image BBS is, you can download my BBS on a stick, install Debian/Ubuntu on the NUC execute the script I wrote and it will install Image on a fresh OS install in about 15-20 minutes depending on speed of your machine. Image runs in a C64 Emulation in Linux. All you need to do is configure it and go. BUT since I am being honest the BBS takes some work if you don't know Image. Thus why I say Mystic if you just want it to run and you login remotely and answer emails and feedback etc..

Hope that helps a little bit...

Working on the linux installation on the nuc.

What i do not understand from the manual is this part:

DO NOT USE ANY OTHER DRIVE ASSIGNMENTS!
System Drive (SYS)  DR=1                            8,1
Mail Drive(MAIL)       DR=2                             8,2
Etcetera Drive(ETC)  DR=3                            8,1
Directory Drive(DIR)  DR=4                            8,2
Plus File Drive(i File) DR=5                            8,0
User Drive(User)       DR=6                            8,1

During the installation it comes with the System device and other devices questions. Do i need to confirm these devices with where they come with?  And change only the DRIVE to 8,1 (system)  and mail DRIVE to 8,2 etc?

keep de devices as they come with and change drives to what is reported in the manual?

No idea what DR=1  tm 6 stands for to 🙂

btw not able to download again 😉

Change each option to what the manual says, System drive Device 8 Drive 1 and so on down the line. That is the way the emulated hard drive is set up...

Sorry about that, a server cron job likes to move the download files during it's maintinance. This is an issue that was resolved yet the cron came back lastnight somehow.  Currently all downloads are working again, just tested all of them to verify.

Thank you for letting us know.
