For those not familiar with the FNX1591 disk drive, it is an IEC compatible drive that is firmware programable to mimic the likes of a Commodore 1581.  So for those looking to get a 1581 or wanting to add to their collection but are put off by the current asking price of them on eBay you might want to check into the FNX1591 by Foenix Retro Systems.

These are selling for $275 and are set to start shipping in April, ordering info is: https://c256foenix.com/product/fnx1591/?v=7516fd43adaa

They are not floppy drives. They are USB drives. Like the GoTek for the Amiga. I wouldn't waste any money on them in my opinion..

I don't know why the price is so low,

I paid 120€ for a remade main board 1581 and parts I would build 4 of them. adv. show same main board.
The ad has two different versions with a disk drive (which probably increases the price) and the second picture is apparently a Gotec disk drive emulator.

  • My mistake, they do come with floppies for an additional price. Not bad if you ask me.

I bought a 1581 replica from Bitbinders – you can find them on Google. They also have a two-drive version. The 1581 replica can use both HD and DD diskettes. Of course, it's only 800 KB, but HD diskettes can still be found here and there. And it has JiffyDOS on board.

Works very well... but be warned: The case is 3d printed and you can see it...

I have had really good results with the FD-4000 reproduction drive the GFD-4000 it has all the capability of an original CMD FD-4000 but with a Gotek that takes a USB drive and it recognizes all the file types.

Format Extension Description Capacity / Notes
D81 .d81 Standard 1581 format 3.5" DD (double density)
D1M .d1m CMD Native format Native partitions
D2M .d2m High Density format HD (high density)
D4M .d4m Extra-High Density format ED (extra density) — FD-4000 signature feature

It is a bit pricey but the ED file type support without having to find physical ED disks that still work opens up a lot of storage possibilities.
