Synchronet 3.18

Years ago when I was looking to put backup up a PC BBS the top two contenders for me were Mystic and Synchronet, ultimately I went with Mystic as you can customize so much on it.  But as the years have gone by I recently revisited Synchronet to see what was new if anything. Sure enough there are a few new features, features that for me are game changing.  Synchronet now supports PETSCII terminal emulation and does a really good job of it!  I also found that some of the doors (DOS) games I had to work at to get to run on Mystic actually work with a less fuss on Synchronet and quiet possibly some of the ones that would not work on Mystic look like they will work on Synchronet.

These are just a couple of the many new finding I am discovering on Synchronet's latest build 3.18 which to me feels like Rob has really done some work from the last time I looked at this software which was only version 3.16.

Where am I going with all this? A new BBS? A change to the current BBS? For that you will have to wait and see, but lets just say Synchronet v3.18 will allow me to offer in 1 BBS the features of at least 2 maybe 3 other BBS programs combined into one!

So if you are BBS curious or looking to put one up, as much as I love Mystic you just might want to watch Robs video to see the features of his latest work at http://synchro.net

I am currently running Bucko's Den on SynchroNet, I just upgraded to the latest nightly 3.19b I believe. Has Rob outdone himself? Absolutely! Petscii support 40/80 in petscii you can literally have 2 different named BBS' running in Petscii one for 40 column and one for 80. Doors run great on it, I also have a door server which runs SynchroNet and that is outstanding. In fact I am about to start testing Petscii door support probably this weekend or next weekend. It would be huge for Commodore users to play Lord, or Tradewars, BRE etc.. I am 99.9% sure CBM users will be able to take advantage of the PC doors. Would I change my main system from Mystic? Nah, I love Mystic, it is simple to use, easy to modify, I can do things with that software that are amazing. I like running both, I am learning the ins and outs of Synchro as I go along, adding menu commands is really simple but I haven't mastered it yet, I will though.. That's my 2 cents.. OR 3 maybe..

Welp I have moved over to Linux with my SynchroNet BBS. Was easier then I expected since I had all sorts of issues converting via the WIki Instructions.. Works great now. Plus contrary to what I thought there is a monitor page to do what the Windows version does at waiting for call. Not the same since I can't get teh GTK side working and not sure I want to, but I will play with it some more.. I am now running 3.19c.. Also I haven't fully tested the Petscii Door Support but my first testing of it well suffice ot say I was able to play some of the single player games with Commodore CG mode. In addition to that I was able to play BRE on a CG terminal! So That testing is going well, Just have to figure out how to implement it so Commodore users can access it without issues.. I am thinking about having 2 options in the menu, 1 for Commodore users, and 1 for ANSI users which if I can get it right the one which is not compatible for your computer will be hidden from view! Lots of things happening!!

@bucko You have been super busy! The little Linux voice inside me is calling again, hehe, it does this every fall!  I like hearing how your boards seem to run much smoother and more reliable (maybe) under Linux.  I think I need to maybe try out your CG games soon.

Are you still running your CNet Amiga board?  I still need to follow up with G00R00 on the PETSCII for Mystic but I keep seeing he is swamped or away from the project for a bit last I looked.

@palkat Yes, C-Net is up and running, in fact K-Guide updated it and released the update about a month or so ago.. The Mystic board runs so much quicker in Linux, I used to get a delay when hitting "I" in the message base to pull up the list. Now it is instantaneous. The SYnchro board is a bit quicker I guess it is because they are running with less overhead.. As for the doors, that isn't live yet, only one it will be live on will be the Synchro board since it supports Petscii, and if I can get it working with the CNet, I believe I can. Right now I am using a Mysitc Bridge to access the Door Server from my CNet.. As for g00r00 haven't seen hide or tail of him in a month or so, last I heard he was really busy with work again.. Hopefully, he will be able to add it in at some time soon..
